As your baby grows into a toddler, you will see new changes in their personality.  They’re able to answer you in more than a yes and no answers.  They’re able to verbally express anger, happiness, pain and unhappiness.  They’ve developed their own individual tastes, can tell you what foods they like and don’t like.

Suddenly they want to choose to their dress themselves, brush their own teeth, and choose their own outfit.

As parents, it is sometimes difficult to relinquish the control over these every day chores.  Toddlers don’t always have good taste.  In your eyes, your daughter’s purple polka dot leggings do not go with the orange sweater and yellow rain boots she put together, but in her mind’s eye it is the perfect combination.

Allowing your toddler to make her own choices is not always easy, but it is the first step in teaching her the independence that she will need to become a strong, confident individual.  If you are overly concerned about her wearing her hideous choice of outfit out in public, you can always put together two or three outfits and allow her to choose the one she wants to wear.

Building confidence in a child can be the most rewarding and frustrating job of a parent, but it really is one of the most important things a parent can instill in their child. Being independent and having high self-esteem are gifts that will carry them through the highs and lows that come with life.

A step stool from Signature Little One’s collection is the ideal way to help your child in her quest for independence.  Now, she can reach the bathroom sink so she can wash her face and hands and see herself as she brushes her hair or she can reach her favorite book on the bookshelf and can hang her own sweater at the end of the day.  There is a step stool available to match your child’s personality, and they can even be personalized with her name.  In addition to the traditional step stool is the Puzzle Footstool for an educational and fun bonus to learning independence.
